About

Shuang gou 1955 Memorial Park-- first place, level A sculpture

The first National Liquor Industry Conference was held in Hebei, Tangshan, on November 3, 1955. To cooperate with the research and discussion of the meeting, the national liquor exhibition and competition was held; 64 degree (128% proof) Shuang gou sorghum Daqu participated in the exhibition and tasting. Through strict scoring and grading, it won the first placeLevel A liquor. To honor this precious prize, 1955 Monument was set up consisting of three firsts, which means the first national liquor industry conference, first level and first place respectively. The liquor jar on top of the monument is in the shape of the Chinese character Jia which also means first class.

Shuang gou 1955 Memorial Park- liquor making process

The two groups of sculptures display how the workers made liquor in early times. When the production conditions were poor, they had to step on Daqu, use donkeys to turn a millstone, burn pots with soil stove and winnow with a wooden spade after steaming. The old master you see here, with an oil lamp in his right hand, is holding a hop cup in his left hand to collect some liquor and then judge the degree of liquor based on how big the hops are. The bigger the hops, the stronger the liquor will be, which is a kind of very original operation method. The other three masters are turning over the fermenting grains, and adding water after steaming the fermented grains. Tools for liquor making used at the workshops in the early times are also of great historic significance, and are regarded as symbolic of the changes of the times and civilization. The wooden wheelbarrow is used for containing fermented grains at early workshops. In the early 1950s, bamboo baskets were also used as containers to carry fermented grains by two workers with bamboo or wooden bars, and now have been replaced by a driving trolley.

From 1955 to 1989, Shuang gou Daqu Liquor remained on the list of the infrequent five National Liquor Tasting Conferences.

In 1955 it won the National First-class Liquor designation which helped its fame spread far and wide.

In 1963 it was named Top Quality Liquor in China at the second Liquor Tasting Conference in Beijing.

In 1979, 39 degree Shuang gou Special Liquor(78° scale ) was the only liquor which won a silver medal for high-quality liquor at the National Third Liquor Tasting Conference hosted at Dalian, the first of its kind in Chinese low alcohol liquor development. Yet this is only a single prize; Shuang gou Daqu as a brand was just among National first-rate liquor, but was rejected from the Eighteen Famous Liquor.

In 1984, Shuang gou Daqu was rated the National Famous Liquor at the Fourth Liquor Tasting Conference. Mr. Ye Shengtao (an influential Chinese author, educator and publisher)90 years old, still cared about the company as much as he could. To express the gratitude, two bottles of Shuang gou Liquor were taken to him. Seeing the familiar liquor, Mr Ye, who did not drink one drop of liquor then, was in great poetic mood and wrote: “Once drank Shuang gou liquor, now too old to try more; mellowness still in my memory, it is really high quality liquor.

In 1989, the fifth National Liquor Tasting Conference was held in Hefei, where 53 degree and 46 degree Shuang gou Daqu (Scale 106 and 92, and 39 degree Shuang gou Special Liquid were rated National Famous Liquor. “Famous liquor is a famous liquor after all as quality is  guaranteed.” At present, the company adheres to the concept of "quality first and the pursuit of excellence" , and constantly promotes the brand and quality innovation to be brand leader in soft-taste liquor .

Shuang gou 1955 Memorial Park- inheritor sculptures
A group of sculptures was set up to remember the inheritors of the older generation, namely from right to left,. Xu Huayi, technical deputy director, and Xu Fenglou and Li Zhaochun, outstanding representatives of liquor making
Mr. Xu participated in the first National Liquor Assessment on behalf of Jiangsu Province in 1955 at the first Liquor-making Conference after selection and recommendation by relevant departments at the county, district, and provincial levels.
Liquor-making master, Xu Fenglou, tried to add high-temperature fire by adding more salt in the anthracite, and his team produced high yield with good quality. He was named the National Model Worker in 1959, and attended the National Hero Conference in Beijing where he was received by the Vice Chairman Liu Shaoji and Prime Minister Zhou Enlai.
Li Zhaochun, an old master who worked at Quandecaofang Distillery before Liberation (1949), is the inheritor of the Shuang gou liquor making technology. After that distillery was incorporated into the Shuang gou Liquor Ltd, he strove to carry forward the traditional liquor-making process and played a key role in improving and perfecting the technology for the next one to two decades.
Shuang gou Liquor boasts of numerous inheritors like these with excellent technology, practical working styles, and strong dedication, which is a most valuable asset of the company. They not only worked diligently themselves, but also trained a group of skilled apprentices, the backbone of the Shuang gou liquor factory in future decades, through teaching by holding their hands.
Shuang gou 1955 Memorial Park-- Ganquan Pavilion in the new factory
As an old saying goes, there is always a nice spring where a famous liquor is located. Li Bai, a Chinese poet in Tang Dynasty, once wrote a poem which says if the world (heaven and the earth) does not love liquor, there should be neither the God of liquor nor a liquor spring underneath. Donggou Spring in the new factory and Xigou Spring in the old factory are good examples of the love from the heaven as an ancient town for liquor making with thousands of years of history. The two springs tell a touching love story that during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, there were two liquor distilleries, one made liquor out of the Donggou Spring, called Donggou Daqu, while the other made out of the Xigou Spring, called Xigou Daqu. They were natural rivals in business. Yet a young lady Sister Joan from Dong gou Workshop fell in love with the young master of Xigou at first sight and secretly exchanged solemn vows of eternal love. Words spread and their family members heard about the relationship and are of course strongly opposed to their marriage. But the two said that they would remain loyal to each other even if the sea ran dry and rocks turned to dust. After some twists and turns, eventually the lovers joined and the two distilleries united as one, regardless of the previous enmity. With rich experience during previous years and the high quality water of the two springs, the liquor quality was more perfect than ever. From then on the liquor was named Shuang gou Daqu which was handed down from age to age to this day.
